About Reflections
In the suite of drawings Reflections, the drawing “Wrapped Ponies” consists of many elements competing for your attention. Let me bring you to the one that is deliberately rendered obscure.
Everything else in the composition is easy to identify - the child in the water, a curious floating proscenium and the curtains on either side of a window or stage. Upon closer inspection, a constellation comes into view above the child’s head - the constellation is the Big Dipper, the one most commonly identified in the night sky.
But the shrouded image could be anything. In fact, it is an invitation for you, the viewer, to imagine what it could be.
At first glance, the wrapped image appears to be a cluster of folds. You might see a shrouded shape resembling ponies. Or you might imagine mannequins lurking or a dance troupe configuring something more ambiguous beneath the folds. The obscure image intrigues you to re-examine other elements in the drawing to find a connection. You consider the curtains and the proscenium serving as a stage…but if the wrapped image resembles ponies, then perhaps the proscenium suggests the top section of a carousel?
The drawings in Reflections intertwine archetypal imagery with dreams and subtle spirituality. We often consider this type of imagery to be ephemeral or intangible. Yet these fleeting elements form the foundation of our inner selves and may actually be the most permanent components in our lives.
